Congregational Announcements
Zion and in-person worship: We are grateful that President Trump considers houses of worship an essential service. Because Zion is committed to offering this service to our community in ways that “spread the Gospel, not the virus,” we will continue to follow Kansas’ and Butler County’s guidelines regarding size limits of mass gatherings. As a way of loving the neighbors in our community—particularly those most vulnerable to this illness—we are currently not planning for in-person worship services at Zion until mid-June at the earliest. In the meantime, we are carefully planning for Zion’s “reopening.” Given necessary safety protocols, when we do reconvene, worship will look and feel quite different than what we are accustomed to. As previously announced, initial gatherings will all be outdoors. More info will be forthcoming.
Important Zoom announcement: Zoom has released several updates recently, with major changes: all meetings henceforth require a password, and all Zoom interaction soon will be encrypted (perhaps causing issues for those with slower connections or older devices). You will not be able to log onto Zoom meetings unless you update your app by May 31.
A recurring Zoom meeting for fellowship has been scheduled, open to any Zion members and friends that are interested—the equivalent of a drop in/out coffee fellowship—simply to chitchat, see each other’s faces and hear each other’s voices, perhaps catch up on some news. This will occur for some weeks on Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. The Zoom “invitation” is as follows:
         Hyperlink: <https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84589789669?pwd=NTV1VitZL0xDayt2T1duSDRhY3BsQT09
>
(or) meeting ID: 845 8978 9669, and meeting password: 743680
Be part of the socially distanced Western District Conference Annual Assembly online on Aug. 1. (Note: This will replace previous plans for an in-person gathering in Texas). Webinars, worship, Danny Carroll (our keynote speaker), and some time to talk together will all be part of this grand experiment. What can the times we’re living in help us to discover about mission? About God’s love for the exile? We hope it will be possible for small groups to host Assembly watch parties together. If not, we’ll be together in Spirit and over digital media. If you would like to serve as a Zion delegate at this event, please indicate your willingness to the church office, which will pass information along to the Gifts Discernment Group prior to our summer business meeting.

Other Organizations
The Board of Directors of New Hope Shelter, Inc., is pleased to announce the hiring of our new Executive Director, Mr. Brian Bisbee. Mr. Bisbee brings a wealth of experience in business, law, and the non-profit sector. He served as the Executive Director of the Carthage Crisis Center in Carthage, MO for over a decade. We look forward to what the future holds for the shelter under his leadership. He and his wife are relocating from Indiana and his start date is June 8, 2020. After he settles in a bit, we plan to host a “welcome” party so that you will all get a chance to know him. We would especially like to express our gratitude to Mrs. Ashli Teel who has risen to the challenge of Interim Executive Director, and done so with competence and grace. She will return to her previous position as Shelter Coordinator. Finally, we are grateful for the ongoing support of our staff, volunteers and donors during this transition.
This summer, Camp Mennoscah is committed to sharing the camp community and God’s love through videos, a Camp in a Box, and/or activities posted online. The videos and activities posted online will be free. A Camp in a Box will contain a camp tee shirt, crafts, activities, devotions, and nature fun, and cost $40; a tee shirt alone will be the usual prices of $11/$16. To order a Camp in a Box or a tee shirt, go to www.campmennoscah.org
and click on Register Online at the top of the page, or contact Camp Mennoscah at 620-297-3290. Orders accepted until June 3. After June 3, please contact Camp Mennoscah.
We have missed our visitors here at the Mennonite Heritage and Agricultural Museum, 200 N. Poplar, Goessel, KS. The museum will reopen our doors on Tues., June 2, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Tues.–Sat., all the while being aware and following the Kansas state guidelines. During this pandemic, your safety is as important as preserving our heritage. Plenty of space allows distancing within the eight buildings on the museum campus. Visitors are welcome to wear face masks. Feel free to call first. 620-367-8200. For other information, visit the museum website <www.goesselmuseum.com
>.

You may wish to print out this order of worship prior to worship, and have any music scores you wish to sing along with available as well. Scans of recommended hymns/songs are attached, should you not have hymnal/supplement books at home. Remember also to have communion elements (bread and juice) available to you as we worship together “virtually.” Note well: Our worship will be “live” this week, not pre-recorded; thus, you will not be able to click on a link at a time of your choosing.

The Zoom meeting will “open” at 10:30 a.m.; you may log on anytime between then and 10:45. Prelude music will begin about 10:40. The meeting host will control the participants’ microphones and video feed (although you should verify that your own microphone is muted); normally only the worship leader(s) or musicians will have a live mic and be displayed. We do anticipate ending with a time of “open” sharing; the meeting host will “call” upon those indicting a desire to share, either by a raised hand, or an indication in the “comments” sidebar.

Prayer for the World                      Adapted from Leader (Spr., 2004), 44                                   Ray Reimer
Look upon us, Lord, and place on us the flame of hope for a world where your love runs rampant,
a home for each child that is caring and safe,
a church that is strong enough to accomplish your mission.
Bless us with the flame of peace:
peace within our hearts, peace among our friends and neighbors,
peace in our workplaces and homes, peace through turmoil, strife and grief.
Remind us again, Lord, that you watch over us and listen to our cries,
that you are the resurrection and the life, that you are near those who are discouraged,
      and that you can restore those who have lost hope;
That you are God—Creator, Risen Christ, and Holy Spirit--
the beginning and the end, the hope of the world, the seed of peace. Amen.
Communion                                                                                                                  Ray Reimer
      Words of Invitation
Prayer of Confession (unison): Almighty God, in wisdom and power you have shared your transforming Spirit with us. Forgive our timid and hesitant response. In our fear and doubt we have forgotten both who you are and who we are as your people. You have blessed us beyond our need, but we do not understand your ways. Breathe your Spirit into our weak hearts.
Words of Assurance, and Prayer of Consecration
Sharing Supper with the Lord… and Each Other
      Prayer of Dedication
Sending Hymn                                    “The Lord lift you up”                                              SJ #73

Open Sharing / Fellowship

Prayer Notes for the week
• As best we’re aware, members and friends of our church family continue to be reasonably healthy at present.
• Remember Elmo Murray on Monday, as he reflects upon his marriage to Dejah in 1947.
• Give thanks for collaborative efforts among WDC congregations as they have responded to the impact of coronavirus through sharing resources, planning joint initiatives and supporting each other.
• Mennonite Mission Network requests prayer for Meserete Kristos College which trains leaders for the Anabaptist churches in Ethiopia. Pray that the faculty, staff and students will shine with God’s light in their communities as the college has had to send students home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
• Help us all to practice social distancing and have the discipline to stay home as much as possible, encouraging others to do the same (without shaming them). And may we have hope even in the face of daunting headlines.

May 25: Memorial Day: Members desiring to place flowers at the Zion Menn. Ch. Cemetery are encouraged to utilize “natural/live” flowers. If it is difficult to obtain those, or cost is an issue, contact the pastors; a member has offered assistance.

May 31, 10:45 a.m.: We are planning a “live” Zoom worship service that all (with internet access) can join on Pentecost Sunday, including celebration of communion. Thus, those Sunday School classes that have been meeting late Sunday morning should schedule their meeting at another time on this weekend. Also, you are encouraged to have your own worship resources available (calls to worship, hymns) as they are distributed, and to acquire communion elements ahead of time.

June 7, 6 p.m. (tentative): Hymn sing on Zion church parking lot; bring lawn chair and hymnbook, if you have one. In view of extended closures and further counsel regarding group singing, the Outreach Board has decided to postpone this event.

Prayer                                                                                                                                Rosie Epp
Gentle and living God, we pause for a moment to focus on you and your impact on our lives, and on your care for the world you have created.
Thank you for life and the beauty that surrounds us, even as we wonder about the future.
We lift to you all our pain and sorrows, all our fears and anxiety, knowing you are present and concerned about each one of us.
      Thank you for your love.
This weekend we remember all who have been special to us, but have died.
May the memories ease our sorrow and bring joy to our hearts.
May your hand of comfort bring healing and peace to those who struggle with illness and the fragility of life.
May we take the time now to connect, or reconnect with those who’ve made an impact on our lives.
Help us to reach out to the lonely with words of comfort and concern.
In this time of uncertainty, we look to you for guidance and patience.
In the midst of stress and anxiety give us a deep understanding of your love and care.
We pray for the teachers and students who are finishing the school year though in an unexpected way.
We pray for families and ask that relationships are finding good ways to be together.
Bring reconciliation to brokenness, break down walls that divide, and help us to see all people as your beloved children.
Thank you for this unexpected time.
May we find our faith strengthened, and see how you have given us an opportunity to transform your world into a better place.
We mourn the losses, but are also aware of blessings in this time.
Surprise us with your mighty deeds, call us to work and love in your name.
All this and more we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Benediction                                                                                             Adapted from WW1, #227 & 240
We praise you, O God, for being with us wherever we are in this special time.
Lead us onward with courage to be witnesses of your work in the world.
Send us forth with your love, resting in your care and the care of God’s people. Amen.

Amos 5:21-23                                                              2020-05-20; Zion Menn. Ch. (Elbing, KS)
Being caught between anxiety and anger seems to be the mood this week. Should we re-open, maybe even have corporate worship in our building, of do we continue to stay safe by social distancing? What do we gain? What do we lose? How careful can we really be? Will those who are most vulnerable stay home? Do we simply trust God? The unknown is hard to live with at the moment.
As I’ve tried to live with the tension, several thoughts have run through my heart and mind. First, worship isn’t just being in a sanctuary with singing, scripture and a sermon, as we used to do before COVID. The prophet Amos wrote, “I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies…take away from me the noise of your songs.” It’s a good reminder that the people of God have not always worshipped in a sanctuary. The early church worshipped in people’s homes. Most of us have also worshiped outdoors at camp or in other places. Hopefully, we have all discovered that worship can happen in many places, even on-line. We can pray, study the Bible, share with others, and more—even when we are at home. God is everywhere. It may take a bit of adjusting, but we can find different, new ways to worship, even as we are separated, but still together. The blessing of this time is to realize that scripted corporate worship in a sanctuary is not the only way to worship together. There is a blessing in this time. Can you see it, taste it, feel it?
Secondly, while we may be eager to resume our communal worship, we have to be aware that we are being influenced by our individual thinking, rather than remembering the best interests of all in our community. We’ve been conditioned to think we have individual rights, but I don’t see the Bible showing much interest in individual rights. Our lives are gifts of God, who wants us to care for our neighbors and even our enemies. We learned in the Sermon on the Mount and other verses in the Bible that God wants us to give food to the hungry, to shelter the homeless, to consider the needs of those who are medically vulnerable. We ought not be fixating on our rights at the expense of love, compassion, and mercy taught to us by the Word of God.

We will gather again in person someday. It may look and feel different. But God is with us even now. We are blessed and loved. Praise God.

Sharing (Please communicate to the pastors any sharing you’d like distributed in the future.
• As best we’re aware, members and friends of our church family continue to be reasonably healthy at present. Elmo has been ill with chest congestion over the last couple weeks but tested negative for COVID-19, spent some time recovering at home, and is now going back to the office.
• Ralph and Jeanne Schmidt are grandparents once more; Jude Archer Schmidt Gehrig was born in Denver to Jill and Ben on May 8, and all are doing well.
• Bethel College holds its first-ever virtual commencement this afternoon. Pray for the 99 graduating seniors and their families as they gather in their homes, and for those who choose not to participate or are unable to do so. Pray for God’s strength and blessing in a time of disappointment and celebration, and a future that is both hopeful and uncertain.
• Graduation update: Jenny Regier (daughter of Daryl and Annette) learned earlier this week that she’s been awarded a two-year fellowship by the nonprofit Equal Justice Works to carry out a project she designed in immigration advocacy. After (presumably) passing the bar sometime this summer, she’ll be working with nonprofit Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) to coordinate a medical-legal partnership to improve health and legal outcomes for medically vulnerable women and gender minorities in immigration detention in Aurora, CO. Jenny interned with RMIAN after her first year at Denver Un. and is thankful for this opportunity to work with RMIAN’s talented, compassionate team.
• Support Camp Mennoscah (and similar organizations) which have been forced to significantly reduce their operations, with concomitant reductions to their revenue.
• Join Mennonite Mission Network in praising God for Noelia Fox’s recovery from COVID-19 and protection for Brian and their three daughters in Spain. Pray that God will provide as the family reconfigures their English-language school due to closure during the pandemic.
• Help us all to practice social distancing and have the discipline to stay home as much as possible, encouraging others to do the same (without shaming them). And may we have hope even in the face of daunting headlines.
Video Sharing: (We are posting a link to several short video clips from Zion families, offering prayer requests, greetings, perspective on their recent activities, challenges and celebrations during this period, favorite movies/reading/recipes, etc.).

Prayer                                                                                                                                Rosie Epp
God of mercy and presence we come to you in prayer as individuals and as families,
yet as one congregation in many places.
Hear our prayers spoken and unspoken, written and oral.
Thank you for compassion and a sense of hope so that we can manage in this time and remain faithful.
Give us rest when we are weary, strength when we are tempted, forgive us when we fail to follow your way.
Break down the walls and fortresses that divide us into us and them,
or that promote making enemies rather than friends,
and anything that prevents us from respecting and loving others as you have loved us.
      Be our peace.
Ease our loneliness, our fear, our anxiety with being socially isolated and more.
We look to you and to your creation for quieting our body and soul, and connecting with you.
      Keep us safe and healthy.
We pray for those who are ill, for those who are hungry, or need shelter.
May your justice come for all.
Thank you for camps like Camp Mennoscah: for the fun we have, the friends we make, the encounter we have with you, God of creation.
We pray for the staff and others who make camp a great place.
May Camp Mennoscah weather this storm of COVID-19 so it can continue to be a place where you are present.
May we continue the work begun by Jesus on this earth and strive to make this world a better, more peaceful place.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Benediction                                                                                                                   WW1, #240
We go now with faith, trusting God’s Spirit to guide us;
We go now with hope, waiting for the fullness of Christ’s reign.
We go now with love, resting in God’s care and the care of God’s people. Amen.

Congregational Announcements
Important Zoom announcement: Zoom has released several updates recently, with major changes: all meetings henceforth require a password, and all Zoom interaction soon will be encrypted (perhaps causing issues for those with slower connections or older devices). You will not be able to log onto Zoom meetings after May 31 unless you update your app by that date.
A recurring Zoom meeting has been scheduled that is open to any Zion members and friends that are interested—the equivalent of a drop in/out coffee fellowship—simply to chitchat, see each other’s faces and hear each other’s voices, perhaps catch up on some news. This will occur for some weeks on Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. The Zoom “invitation” is as follows:
         Hyperlink: <https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84589789669?pwd=NTV1VitZL0xDayt2T1duSDRhY3BsQT09
>
(or) meeting ID: 845 8978 9669, and meeting password: 743680
May 25: Memorial Day: Members desiring to place flowers at the Zion Menn. Ch. Cemetery are encouraged to utilize “natural/live” flowers. If it is difficult to obtain those, or cost is an issue, contact the pastors; a member has offered assistance.
June 7, 6 p.m. (tentative): Hymn sing on Zion church parking lot; bring lawn chair and hymnbook, if you have one. In view of extended closures and further counsel regarding group singing, the Outreach Board has decided to postpone this event.
Charting a path forward: In the last couple days, the Governing Council and Deacons have both considered the future as we ponder how Zion will start to gather again in person. A fair number of details remain to be worked out, but some of the determinations thus far include:
• Attendees will be strongly encouraged to “self-monitor” their own health as we “re-open,” paying particular attention to any of the now-classic symptoms and history (fever, cough, sneezing, loss of taste, etc.; recent travel to “hot spots” or contact with known cases)—and voluntarily staying home if such elements exist. And we’ll respect those who might stay away simply because of added caution.
• For those who don’t come to gathered events, we’ll try to provide a fair number of hybrid experiences, recording the “in-person” events and posting them to YouTube ASAP.
• For those who come to gathered events, we’ll strongly encourage social distancing, wearing of masks, etc. No handshakes, hugs, fist/elbow bumps, please.
• The earliest we’ll consider having “public” events is early June (after groups of up-to-90 are again permitted via state order—and if that date is postponed, we’ll postpone. Furthermore, if infections appear to be on the rise in the aftermath of the current public “re-openings” or problems start emerging from other churches regathering, we’ll reconsider). Thus, our first re-gathered event may be the hymn sing the evening of June 7 (now postponed); if that goes well, we may worship together on the morning of June 14.
• Our initial gatherings will all be outdoors (probably often under the trees in the backyard of the parsonage). Bring lawn chairs; sit together as families; keep a few feet of distance from others. If weather doesn’t allow for outside gathering, we’ll cancel in the initial weeks. When we might start gathering inside the sanctuary is yet to be determined.
• Initially we’ll primarily gather for worship; no Sunday School in person yet (further determinations of that are in process). SS classes are encouraged to continue to meet via Zoom, etc.
• Parents are encouraged to keep their children with them, and do their best to avoid personal contact amongst children; we know this will be difficult, and don’t want to be legalistic. Use of the playground equipment should probably be avoided.

Midweek Devotion
Devotion                                                                                                                           Rosie Epp
Deuteronomy 26:1-2                                                  2020-05-13; Zion Menn. Ch. (Elbing, KS)
During these past weeks it’s been more difficult to keep track of not only what day it is, but to keep hope and wonder alive.  It reminds me of the people wandering in the wilderness after leaving Egypt.  Day after day for 40 years the people wandered in the desert anticipating a better life, yet with the sameness and harshness of each day as grumbling and despair grew.  What was God thinking?!
Forty years later, not forty days, they reach a new world, green and brimming with life.  And as they entered God wanted them to notice the wonder and delight that was around them.  And to give thanks.  (Deuteronomy 26:1-2).
These are words for us to ponder today.  Can we at the end of each day, as individuals or as families, sit for five minutes after supper or before we go to bed and answer two simple questions:  What moment today are we most grateful for (or what gives us the most life)? And what moment are we least grateful for?
There are many ways to ask the same questions:  When was I happiest, when was I saddest?  What was today’s high point?  Low point?  This process is called the Examen and is meant to help us identify moments of consolation and desolation.  Moments of wonder and praise, and moments of loneliness.  When is God most present or most absent from our lives.
It’s easy these days to moan about what we can’t do because of social distancing, etc.  But can we focus more on the wonder of each day, each moment, and see, taste, delight, and even wonder at God’s goodness.  As we focus on what brings our heart joy and peace, I believe our lives can shift, for that is one way to hear the voice of God and follow God’s guidance.
Rather than being caught in the downward spiral of despair (I can’t do this, I can’t see these people), center on what is present and what is enriching your life now.  Notice the wonder of God’s world and give thanks.  Springtime is a good time to do this as we see the trees blossoming, as we wait and watch for seeds to sprout, and the world to green and flower, giving us hope for another season.  Carry that image with you and God will bless you abundantly, even in this COVID wilderness.
